A lot of fish like danios lay many eggs.  The young can eat food too small for the adults.  The adults then eat the baby fish.  Only the best babies survive to adulthood so there is much selection pressure which is good for a species.  If they had very few or larger young, there would be a higher percentage surviving but they might not be small enough to eat very small food and there would be less food for the adults to eat.  It increases the biomass of the fish to have swarms of tiny babies filtering the water.
