I know they're located in the cytoplasm but where? Next to what?

I think it's different in every cell but in most diagrams I've seen, the lysosome is located to the left of the R.E.R./nucleus and to the right of the vacuole. It's just floating in the cytoplasm.

I wouldn't pay any attention to the artist's renderings you see in textbooks.  To say that any particular organelle is to the left or to the right of any other organelle most likely won't be right.  Organelle localizations can very from cell type to cell type and are dynamic within a single cell.
