if a compound is made form a metal and nonmetal(they are bonded with ionic bond) it will dissolve(except a very few exceptions).

Typically ions will dissociate in water, such as table salt (NaCl) dissolving in water.  It completely dissociate into Na+ and Cl- ions. Disassociation is require for ions to dissolve.  However, non-ionic compounds, such as sugar, will also dissolve in water but it does not dissociate. It dissolves through the intermolecular forces such as hydrogen bonding.
