Specifically, is Avogadro's number required to calculate the atomic weight of tin? Or could we know the atomic weight of an element without already knowing Avogadro's number?

I believe not. Never in my life did I have to use Avogadro's number to find ATOMIC WEIGHT. To find the atomic weight, just use the periodic table which is allowed on Advanced Placement tests (so you should be able to always use it)

I think you are asking if scientist originally calculated the atomic weight of tin using avogadro's number.  If you are, here is the answer

Avogadro's number was calculated before the atomic weights of elements were established.  Avogadro's number was used to define 12 g/mol in Carbon and then all other atomic weights were based off of this.
