A 100 MW power station generates energy at 26.0 kV.  The power lines must carry only 200 A of current to be efficient enough.  To what voltage must the potential be increased?

power = voltage \(\times \) current

\(P=VI\)

We are told the power (100MW = 100x10⁶ W)

We are told the current we want (I = 200A)

So we can find the voltage we want

Rearrange the formula to get V isolated

V = P/I

Put the value in

V = 100x10⁶ / 200

V = 5 x10⁵ V

If you want the answer in kV, divide by 1000

V = 500kV

(The value of 26.0kV is not needed here.)
