The Smith family signed up for a cell phone plan. In their plan they pay 50 cents per minute and a $4 monthly fee.  An equation that compares the minutes they talk (x) and the amount of their  bill (y) would be y = 1/2x + 4
Use your knowledge of slope-intercept form to graph the line on a coordinate plane.

Okay. If you talk for 0 minutes, it costs $4.
Graph the point (4,0)
If you talk for 1 minute it costs $4 + 1/2
graph the point (4.5,1)
If you talk for 2 minutes it costs $4 + 2(1/2) or 5$
graph (5,2)
As you ought to see, the y-intercept is $4 and the slope is1/2
That's the trick. Always use the "basic" cost as the y-intercept and the cost per item is the slope.

Ok, don't worry - this is a fairly simple question. Since you already have the equation, you have the hardest part of the problem done for you. So, you should know that slope intercept form is y = mx + b therefor, the y is y coordinate, the m is 1/2 (slope) the x is x coordinate, and the b is 4 (the y-intercept). When graphing, first mark the y-intercept which is 4 and then just use slope and plug in your points in the equation. When you do this, you'll see that you go up 1 and over 2, meaning it's a positive slope. You're points will be infinite but if you want some points, you'll see that when x = 1 then y = 4 1/2, when x = 2 then y = 5, when x = 3 then y = 5 1/2, and so on. I hope this helps Slight Smile

breaking down the equation  y=1/2x+4
1/2 is the slope of the line--the top number represents the rise and the bottom number the horizontal run.

For a slope of 1/2,  the line rises by one tick on your graph paper for every 2 runs horizontally.

finally, the +4 is the y-intercept or where the line crosses the vertical axis line.

to graph this line start at the point, (0,4) Leftwards Arrow-zero over, and four up.
then rise 1, run 2... repeat this until you have a line.
also, drop 1 and run 2 to the left when continuing the line on the left side of your graph.
hope this helps
