very easy to do, just isolate it, and .... well here, 5x+3=5 instead, reduce 3 on both sides to move it, 5x=2 then divide by 5 to undo x=2/5 though that equals a fraction, they usually don't in basic algebra

Well, in an expression you can't really solve for a variable, because there is no equality or inequality sign, you can only simplify it. Like:

2(5+3)-1 would be simplified to 15

2x+4x-2+4 would be simplified to 6x+2

In an equation, you can solve for a variable because there is an equality or inequality sign. Like:

6x=3 where x=2
