I often wondered if building cargo spacecrafts and taking and storing the radioactive waste in the outer space (like on the moon, or on an asteroid), wouldn't be a better alternative to storing it in deep mines underground. There are multiple issues with the safety of such mines, like water leakage and rusting of the containers, damage caused by earthquakes ... etc.

1) do not produce new radioactive material in the first place

2) the problem with "shooting it into space is:

the Space shuttles have had less than 120 flights and TWO crashed.

if 2% of all radioactive dump flights crashed back it would be a world wide disaster

deep dry storrage seems the best idea so far

THE PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN SOLVED

Add to tontron's answer... Yucca Mt is a salt dome so the risk of water is small and the salt is plastic so, of the course of years, the salt will flow and seal the mine so people will not be able to get at it without digging it up again.
