1. What biotic and abiotic components of the environment affect the life cycle of the lodgepole pine? What biotic and abiotic components of the environment affect the life cycle of the mountain pine beetle?

2. can you suggest reasons why the current mountain pine beetle infestation has lasted longer than usual 5 to 7 years?

3. what can you infer from the local reports about the impact of the loss of the trees on other organisms?

For the 1st question, abiotic factors are non-living physical and/or chemical factors which affect the ability of organisms to survive and reproduce. For example: light intensity, temperature, pH level, water availability, pollutant levels, etc. Biotic factors are all the living things or materials that directly or indirectly affect an organism in its environment. For example: parasitism, diseases, predators, etc. You will have to use the reasons listed in either the rest of the question or the reading to answer properly. IE - did the reading tell you what is in the lodgepole pine and mountain pine beetle's environment?

For question 2...lack of predation is probably one of the reasons...again, to answer fully you need to know what the reading says...

Same with question 3...need more info.

for number 3 - usually loss of tree impacts other organisms by loss of habitat as well as food and life cycles.
