What is Action Potential and Chemical Synaptic Transmission?

I think...

Sodium rushes in and potassium rushes out...but what exactly happens?

Hi, as the action potential reaches the end of the axon, a chemical is released that travels across the synaptic cleft to the next neuron to alter its electric potential -- this is called the chemical synaptic transmission.

Thanks! Do you know what "ionic events" are associated with the action potential? I'm having a lot of trouble with this.
