I am familiar with the criteria used to clinically recognize SIRS. Also, I know that sepsis is SIRS and the presence of a known or suspected infection.  What I am wondering is in what type of situation SIRS can manifest without a "known or suspected infection?"  What disease or process could bring about the signs associated with SIRS and yet not be involved with some sort of infection?
