Bacteria reproduce by binary fission, which is an asexual process. How are bacteria able to produce new strains other than mutations?

They are able to take up plasmids, small circular pieces of DNA, from the environment or they can exchange plasmids during conjugation (the closest thing bacteria have to sex).
