Some solvents used were very polar otheres were non-polar. Does the polarity affect retention values? why might this be so?
I used Methyl Orange, Blue and Pink in four different solvents

Remember that the paper has an affinity for the tested substance too...when its affinity is greater than the affinity of the substance for the mobile phase it get deposited.  This is what you see when you develop up the solvent front...
