Price fixing occurs when a group of companies agree among themselves to set the products' prices, independent of market demand or supply. It is illegal and it is also unethical, because it causes customers to have to pay more than fair market value for goods they may need. Individuals asked to participate in price fixing would have personal ethical issues to face as well. They may feel pressured to cooperate with company actions that violated their own personal ethical standards. Students may refer to the Archer Daniels Midland example, in which the wife of a senior executive threatened to divorce him unless he found a way to end his involvement in a price fixing scheme.
