Hello there,

I am a middle aged woman who has suspicions about a pituitary tumour. I have been diagnosed with alopecia areata, papilloma (breast leakage) and tinnitus. I was just wondering if any of these symptoms could be linked to, or be side effects of a developing pituitary tumour. Could you also suggest any possible side effects of a pituitary tumour, besides the ones I have mentioned (if they are side effects).

Also, when you post your answer could you please state whether you are a qualified medical professional etc, just so I can gauge which responses may be the most reliable.

Thanks a lot, Dawn.

I just looked up a comprehensive list of symptoms, but I think you could be on to something because of this kind of turmor would screw up your hormones so that could cause breast leakage, which is not the same as a papilloma - I will leave a definition below. Can you request some neuoimaging from your doctor?

Here is that symptom list:

Out of the bunch, the only one with a strong tie would be the galactorrhea, and it would be hard to confuse that with ductal papillomata.

There are different types of pituitary tumors, ones that secrete hormones and ones that don't. If the tumor secretes hormones you may have abnormal growth, abnormal menstrual periods, breast discharge etc. If the tumor is large it can cause compression of the optic nerves leading to peripheral vision loss.
Here is some more info on pituitary tumors:

Headaches and vomiting due to increased intercranial pressure.

The classic symptom of a pituitary tumor putting pressure on the optic chiasm, where the optic nerves intersect in the brain, is heteronomyous (bitemporal) hemianopsia, a decrease in visual acuity of the outer visual fields.

Not all tumors of the pituitary are hormone producing. Hormones produced by the pituitary include growth hormone which causes acromegaly (enlargement of the hands and jaw, mainly), prolactin which controls lactation in part, TSH which regulates the thyroid gland, LH which regulates the menstrual cycle or sperm production, and ACTH which regulates the adrenal glands production of cortisol.

Personally, I cannot link tinnitus or alopecia areata with a pituitary tumor. And I think a secreting papilloma differs from galactorrhea.
