A 1 liter container of milk and 0.5 liter container of milk are both at room temp 20 deg C. Temperature and thermal energy are proportional to each other, but they are not the same concept. For example, if we heat up the 1 liter and 0.5 liter, when the 1 liter is warm, the 0.5 liter will be hot. The increase in energy is the same, but the temperatures are not.

However, does this mean that they started out with the same amount of thermal energy?
