Bronfenbrenner described a "bioecological" model of human development. The focus of his model is on the social and institutional influences on a child's development, from family, schools, churches, and neighborhoods to broader social and political influences, such as mass media and government. Bronfenbrenner's main contribution was in showing how development is influenced at each of the levels of his model: macrosystem, exosystem, mesosystem, microsystem. Bronfenbrenner critiques the Piagetian view for its limited focus beyond the child.
