Calculate the ratio of HCO3- to H2CO3 in the patient?s blood 10 hours after the ingestion of the aspirin (pH = 7.55). The Ka1 for H2COis 4.4 x 10-7.

Thanks in advance

You just have to know the definition of Ka.

Ka = [H+][A-] / [HA]

where HA is the protonated acid and A- is the conjugate base. In this case with carbonic acid, it is:

Ka = [H+][HCO3-] / [H2CO3]

which can be re-arranged to:

[HCO3-] / [H2CO3] = Ka / [H+]

You are given Ka. You can figure out [H+] from the definition of pH:

pH = -log[H+]

which can be re-arranged to:

[H+] = 10^ (-pH)
