Here's the question:

Magnesium hydroxide is 54.87% oxygen by mass. How many grams of oxygen are in 175 g of the compound? How many moles of oxygen is this?

My book tells me that the answer is 96.0 g O; 6.00 mol O

But how did it come up with this?

Help would be greatly appreciated!

0.5487 x 175 = 96g. That is just taking a simple percentage of 175g.

Number of moles = mass / molar mass

n = 96 / 16 = 6 moles.
