There are some compounds that end in 'hydroxide', for example, calcium hydroxide, or sodium hydroxide. But there are also compounds that end in 'oxide' such as copper oxide. So what is the difference between the compounds ending in 'hydroxide' and the ones ending in 'oxide'?

Hydroxide indicates the OH- ion.  An oxide is just oxygen bonded to or as an ion to another element.

hydroxide contains one oxygen and one hydrogen. The radical is one for it.
oxide has two oxygens.The radical is 2 for it.

The hydrogen

An oxide, like CuO, is devoid of water.  Oxygen is only bonded to the metal.

In hydroxide, like Cu(OH)2, each oxygen is bound to both the metal and to a hydrogen.

Please note that hydrated oxides (like CuO.2H2O) is not a hydroxide - it is just a wet oxide.

hydroxide is mainly consist of bases and its empirical formula is OH^-1

you get oxide when you have a single oxygen atom in a nonmetal pair of molecule

An oxide is a combination of oxygen with another element.  water could technically be called hydrogen oxide.  A hydroxide is a combination of an element with an OH ion attached.  Calcium Oxide is CaO, Calcium Hydroxide is Ca(OH)2  Adding water to Calcium Oxide will form Calcium Hydroxide.  This true of most metal oxides.  Non metal oxides like Nitrous Oxide form acids when water is added.
