I'm thinking of a Mad Max sort of world here. What would happen if grains and all the other staple food crops the world relies on died tomorrow? Could the remaining edible foods be enough to sustain 8 billion people? What level of starvation would we be looking at? I recognize this is primarily guess-work here, but I know many people who look at the questions are in fields of study where they can make more educated guesses than I can. Thanks.

in very round numbers. if you add up the major grains and potatoes, you're looking at about 75% of the worlds food supply by weight (remember most meat & eggs, & milk is grain dependent)...worse yet, you'd be talking about about 90% of the calories...so your mad max scenario would produce mass starvation and food wars...
