Why do the coldest months of the year in the Northern Hemisphere have the fewest daylight hours?

The coldest months of the year in the Northern Hemisphere are December, January, and February, even though the fewest daylight hours occur in December. Why is this?

They are the coldest months because they receive so little sunlight for those few months. This is because of the earth's tilt of its axis.

The tilt of Earth's axis is at it's greatest inclination during those months.
