1. How does the quantity of urine formed by a frog change when the frog moves from a pond onto land?

2.A women undergoes the removal of her goiter. Following this operation, she develops a tetanus (which is caused by calcium imbalance) which may be deadly. Why would she have developed this? What treatment would be best for this woman? (4 marks)

Hi there! Welcome back

1. How does the quantity of urine formed by a frog change when the frog moves from a pond onto land?

According to one source I found:

Frogs produce large quantities of dilute urine in order to flush out toxic products from the kidney tubules. The nitrogen is excreted as ammonia by tadpoles and aquatic frogs but mainly as urea, a less toxic product, by most terrestrial adults.

2.A women undergoes the removal of her goiter. Following this operation, she develops a tetanus (which is caused by calcium imbalance) which may be deadly. Why would she have developed this? What treatment would be best for this woman? (4 marks)

That is true, a severely low calcium level can lead to throat spasm or a seizure. The reason why is because the parathyroid gland which is located near the thyroid gland controls calcium. Like all endocrine glands, parathyroids make a hormone (a small protein capable of causing distant cells in the body to react in a specific manner). Parathyroid hormone has a very powerful influence on the cells of the bones which causes them to release their calcium into the bloodstream.
