i am confuse with these equations

-log(..)
pH+ pOH = 14.00
antilog

how do i know when i should use them?

for example
calculate the pH for each of the following solutions

A) 1.0x10^-4 M H+
they got ph=4.00 which i understand
using -log(1.0x10^-4)

 B) 0.040 M OH-
but  when i use   -log() ====> -log(0.040)  i got 1.40 but they got 12.60

and

The pH of a solution is 5.85.  What is the [H+] for this solution?
they got                [H+] = 1.4 × 10–6 M
