I know that having part of the gene gives you immunity to Malaria, but how/why???
My Biology book doesn't specify...

it is better when heterozygous because sickle cell anemia protects against malaria, so the person's cells are not completely sickle-shaped, but they still get the lessened chances of getting malaria. The sickle-shape of the cell is what prevents against malaria
