Why was it previously believed that only DNA viruses could cause cancer? How can RNA viruses cause cancer?
Answer:
The cancer genes of oncoviruses are similar to certain genes in the nucleic acid of the host, when a virus infects the host, the host gene may become part of a new virus particle following viral replication. Over time, the host gene becomes altered due to mutations. Eventually the altered gene replaces the normal gene which causes the cell to multiply faster and avoid apotosis.
