When marketing goods online, traditional distributors can disappear completely.   Vertical conflict occurs when a channel member believes that another member at a different level is engaging in inappropriate conduct. Apple's iTunes store offers music for download. They have a broad selection, users can preview the music while shopping, can shop from the convenience of their own home 24/7 and album prices are lower than traditional music stores. Further, the target market for a large % of music purchases is very comfortable with technology and online shopping. Traditional retailers bear the overhead expense of a "bricks and mortar" store, have greater difficulty offering the selection and convenience of the iTunes store. Traditional retailers are closing under the competitive pressure, demonstrating disintermediation.
