Im almost done with this assignment but this one is stumping me please help

physio ex 9 Respiratory system mechanics.  Activity 3

Did the atelectasis in the left lung affect the function of the right lung? why or why not?

I know that it did not affect the right lungs function but I dont know why? Confounded Face

Hi, I'm new here and don't really understand what the PhysioEx thing is? But I can have a go at answering the question.

If it was a whole lung atelectasis, there would be ipsilateral vasoconstriction, pushing all the blood to the contralateral lung. That would affect the other lung in the sense that you'd get a V/Q mismatch (overperfusion) and a resultant Type 1 respiratory failure.

If it was a lobar collapse then you may also get overexpansion of the remaining lobes, partially compensating for the V/Q mismatch.
