independent assortment: referse to when they line up on the equatorial plate during metaphase...they line up in any order and on either side

segregation: basically that each gamete recieves only half of the full complement, to ensure that the cells are haploid

Law of independent assortment correlate with meiosis-I segregation.  Each chromosome pair segregates independent of the segregation pattern of the other chromosome pairs.

Law of segregation correlates with meiosis-II segreation.  The chromatids separate one to each pole without any bias thereby giving rise to 50% of the gametes with one allele and 50 with the other allele.
