Support educational programs designed to foster understanding and appreciation for differences in people. Many colleges and universities require diversity classes as part of their academic curriculum.
Examine your attitudes and behaviours. Are you intolerant of others? Do you have beliefs about a particular group? Do you engage in behaviours that demean any group or individuals?
Discourage racist, sexist, and homophobic jokes and other forms of social or ethnic bigotry. Do not participate in such behaviours and express your dissatisfaction with others who do. Silence condones others' behaviours.
Vote for community leaders who respect the rights of others, value diversity, and do not have racially or ethnically motivated hidden agendas.
Educate yourself. Read, interact with, and try to understand people who appear to be different from you. Respecting people's right to be different is part of being a healthy, integrated individual.
Examine your values in determining the relative worth of your friends and others in your life. Are you judgmental? Are you somewhat intolerant of others' differences? How do you resolve your tendencies to be judgmental and bigoted? Do you judge people on appearance? Do you take time to get to know who they are as individuals? Do you respect them as individuals?
