Rebates are a predetermined amount of money returned to the consumer by the manufacturer after the purchase has been made. Slippage happens when a consumer starts collecting proofs of purchase for a refund offer, but neglects to follow through and submit a request for the refund. In effect, the manufacturer does not pay the rebate for purchases induced by the promotion. Time-pressed consumers often forget about the rebate offer.
