• Functions: helps remove CO2 from the blood, maintaining normal pH range; participates in digestion as part of HCl.
• Too much: may cause hyperchloremia (hyperconcentration in the blood as a result of dehydration)
• Too little: may cause hypochloremia (low chloride levels caused by severe vomiting or diarrhea)
