Kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin that stimulates the red bone marrow to make more RBC's.

RBC's are broken down in spleen (some in liver) and bilirubin is produced from the organic part of heme.  Hemoglobin is the protein in RBC's that trnasports oxygen.  Besides the four chains of amino acids, it also has four molecules called heme embedded in it..the heme carries the oxygen.  The heme is made from iron and an organic or carbon-containing part.

Bilirubin is eliminated via the liver into bile which goes into the intestines.  If the liver is unable to get rid of the bilirubin, it builds up in tissues and causes jaundice.
