Question I need help with:

Top and bottom homologs both have 5 repeats (each repeat is 500bp long). A cut is made in the middle of the top homolog pairing (bottom homolog intact), after strand invasion and recombination the top homolog contains 7 repeats.

Can someone walk me through this explanation? Does it have to do with the way the holiday junctions are cut? How does the top homolog acquire 2 more repeating units?

My guesses would be homologous recombination or alternative splicing.  Essentially, this process is another way to introduce genomic variation, so even a mutation is possible in reality, but I think for the scope of this question, my first two suggestions would be better answers.
