How was Darwinism perceived in European society?
 
  A) Darwinism was widely supported by atheists and anarchists.
  B) Darwinism had its skeptics and was disparaged, particularly by those from the Church.
  C) Despite detractors and supporters, the theory of evolution was widely accepted by the end of the nineteenth century and used as a platform to further scientific research.
  D) Many did not know how to perceive Darwin's theory as it was contrary to anything they thought or understood prior to that time.
  E) Darwin was controversial and like anything controversial, debate ensued and is still ongoing today.
