Metabolism is viewed as the entire biochemical pathway in an organism, which means both catabolism and anabolism, that maintains life.  If we start with reduced carbon atoms, which are present in organic molecules, we can transform the potential chemical energy into thermal, kinetic, or any other form of chemical energy by metabolic and anabolic transformations.  These transformations include processes like the calvin cycle and cirtic acid cycle.
