The formal outline is a complete sentence outline that reflects the full content of the
speech and its organizational pattern. Here the speaker should employ the principles of
outlining and be sure that letters and numbers are attached as appropriate. The speaking
outline is the one the speaker actually uses when it is time to give the speech. It is a condensed
or pareddown version of the formal outline. The speaking outline is written just for the
speaker, and should be made up of essential words and phrases rather than full sentences. The
speaking outline may also contain directions about the delivery of the speech, supporting
quotations and definitions written in complete sentences, and keyword reminders of the steps
in the introduction and conclusion.
