Relational dialectics involve the notion that relationships are influenced by opposing
tensions that are managed through communication. These tensions change over time. The first
tension is autonomyconectedness and refers to the amount of time a dyad spends together or
apart. The second is predictabilitychange and refers to the amount of change versus routine
in a dyad's relationship. In other words, some dyads really value predictability, while others
highly value novelty. The third is opennessclosedness. This refers to the amount of selfdisclosure expressed by the dyad. The more open, the more disclosure experienced in the relationship.
