One cannot not communicate. This refers to the idea that nonverbally we are always
sending messages, both intended and unintended. All communication has a content and a
relationship dimension. This means that when we speak, the content dimension is the actual
worded message, and the relationship dimension refers to the roles each person plays in the
interaction. Communication is a series of punctuated events. This is the notion of cause and
effect in regard to a particular communicative act or series of acts. Communication is
irreversible and unrepeatable. Once messages have been sent they cannot be recalled, and
messages can never truly be repeated in the exact same communication situation in which
they originally occurred. Finally, communication is culturespecific, which means that each
culture has unique rules for how people should interact.
