Why do photographers use red in the darkroom when developing film?

I am on the Special Senses Chapter from my A&P Lab manual and I do not understand what this question has to do with the eye? Any help??? Thank you

red light is used as it falls in the visible spectrum, allowing photographers to see the pictures being developed and see around the room, but due to its extremely long wavelength and the energy equation E=hf, the energy created by the red light is not enough to affect the photo developing process
