i would like to know why it happens because i cannot find it any where else and i need to know for my Science fair project.

I have a feeling this is not known precisely.  Probably the plant hormone Indole-3-acetic acid plays a role.  There is a mutation in corn known as 'lazy' which causes the shoot not to sense gravity, it grows prostrate along the ground, neither going up nor down.  As far as i know the nature of this mutation is not known
