SlideshowReport

An example of the founder effect with subsequent adaptive radiation.

Description
The honeycreepers' ancestor is believed to be related to a Eurasian rosefinch that arrived on the Hawaiian Islands approximately 3 million–7 million years ago. Since that time, at least 54 different species of honeycreepers (Drepanidinae) have evolved on the islands. A few selected examples are shown here. Adaptations to feeding have produced species with notable differences in beak morphology.
