The API Staph strip is used to test for coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species because it is a rapid and reliable method for identifying these organisms. The API Staph strip is a commercially available system that uses a series of biochemical tests to identify Staphylococcus species based on their metabolic characteristics. The tests are designed to detect specific enzymes or metabolic pathways that are unique to different species of Staphylococcus. Coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species are identified by their ability to produce acid from certain sugars and by their ability to reduce nitrate to nitrite.

I hope this helps!
