SOC 2160 Current social problem in relation to family Sarah Porter 10/27/2019 The current social issue that I would like to discuss today is tuition cost. I chose this social issue because it is something that pertains to my life today. It is effecting me and will effect my future. I think this is something that has an importance to a lot of people. People who have choosen to get an education and people who have choosen not to get an education, because of tutition cost and their financial situation. The tutition cost will have effects on families by the obvious, deciding whether or not the parents themselves have an education. That then moves to the effect it has on potential children. Most children who have uneducated parents, will be uneducated themselves. Second, this effects families by whether or not they will live in poverty for a few decades while they pay off student loans. Another way it can effect families is by deciding whether or not they will create based on their financial situation. If they simply can not afford to bring another human into the world and are wise, they will choose not to have kids because of this reason. Another way it can effects families is that even though children are 18, living on their own, have a serious relationship with a partner; they are in school and still need help from parents. This also increases the length that a child depends on their parents. Extending the time in between dependence upon parents and full self independence. My social issue example does not really conflict with any other social issues or policies. In the 70's when the government passed that banks could give out student loans was when the increase in college tuition began to slowly arise. I think this law could be re-evalutated in the interest of making it harder for students to access these. The social policy of the increasing student tuition does correlate and add to other social problems like poverty, afforadable housing, society that lives with debt. Teenagers believe and are told by so many people that you have to go to college to be successful in this society. They get student loans, graduate college and within 6 months are bombarded with payments anywhere from $300-1,000 montly. Some can afford this with their entry level job, but some can not. Then goes rent and regular living expenses. For someone like me, who is going for Human Services and in their entry level job is going to make between 20,000-35,000 a year, the reality is I am going to be living in poverty. Sine I have come to this realization, I have been extremely turned off and honestly against the idea of going to get my bachelors. Welcome to your life, where you will live swimming in debt. No thanks. The spread of "free college" sounds great, but is it really obtainable? Young adults still want a good and worthy education and with that, the colleges need to hire good professors. I think the ability to take out a bunch of student loans should be more restricted. I think the people applying for student loans should have to have a plan and idea of what they are doing with their degree before they take out a bunch of money. Tons of people go to college and don't even end up using their degree. They go because that is what society has told them to do. I think somewhere in the system, the college tuition should be lowered. Not eliminated, but reduced. I am not sure how that would be able to happen. In conclusion, the overwhelming thought of being thousands of dollars is turning young adults away from the idea of obtaining further education. It is causing society to live in poverty. It is damaging our kids and their ability to live their life to the fullest. I hope this social policy can find a solution and seek that. Not only for my sake, but the sake of my children and next generations. c) What alternative policy would you put in its place?
