(a) Mean duration (days) and (b) average maximum depth (mm) of snow cover throughout northern latitu

Description
Notice that in the far north there are relatively few days without snow cover each year. As a consequence, liquid water is available to support growth and activity for only short periods of each year. Throughout most of Canada, however, snowmelt generally results in moist soils in the spring, and water is not generally limiting to spring and early summer plant growth. Water may become more limiting during the summer, depending upon the amount of rainfall that is received.
