Structure of vitamin B12

Description

The molecule shown here is the cyanide-containing form originally isolated (cyanocobalamin).

In cells, a water molecule or hydroxyl group takes the place of CN, forming the precursor to the coenzyme forms of B12.

The corrin ring is shown in red.

5,6-Dimethylbenzimidazole (DMB), which is linked to the cobalt, is shown in blue.
