Ans: SKI proteins function in the process of nonstop decay for mRNAs lacking termination codons. Without such a codon, the ribosome translates through the poly(A) tail and stalls at the 3 terminus, but is not released without a release factor. Ski7 binds to the ribosomal A site to release the mRNA from the ribosome, and recruits other SKI proteins and the exosome to facilitate 3 to 5 mRNA decay.
