If the condition were heterozygous, the test cross would produce results that included both the dominant and recessive trait.
If the condition were homozygous dominant, the test cross would only produce results of the dominant trait.

That's how the test cross, which is a recessive, is used to distinguish the homozygous dominant from the heterozygous condition of the same trait.

A homozygous recessive is used in the test cross:- eg. tt
If TT -  then when  x tt - get all Tt in offspring. 100% dominant phenotypes
If Tt  -  then when x tt - get 50% Tt and 50% tt in offspring. 50% recessive phenotypes and 50% dominant phenotypes.
