Ans: By definition, pseudogenes are nonfunctional, and therefore their identity is based on their relatedness to functional genes. The mutations that make them nonfunctional can abolish their transcription (some processed pseudogenes are derived from mRNA and therefore lack promoters, as well as introns), their proper RNA splicing, and their translation into a full-length polypeptide.
