Ever come across a drug, chemical, natural product etc which is antimicrobial due to damage in the nucleic acid? There are loads of antibiotics that inhibit DNA replication by inhibiting the proteins involved in replication but are there any that 'specifically' cause DNA damage?

Good question. I did some research and I found this: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/336/6079/315.abstract

Pretty interesting study which explains that while antibiotics attack many parts of bacteria cells, it is the damage they cause to their DNA that inflicts the fatal blow.
